Beware of Falling Ice
One of the advantages of a having a metal roof is the snow and ice will melt and slide off more quickly. That is usually a good thing, especially on years when we have lots of snow, like this year. For the winter of 2008, we have received more snowfall than any year since 1987. We have also had alternating periods of extreme cold (-20) and heavy snow fall. This has lead to up nearly 3 feet of snow on the roof and a large layer of ice on the bottom. Yesterday afternoon the snow and ice literally avalanched off, including several chunks of ice that weighed 50 to 70 pounds. It is a good thing it happened on Sunday and not on a week day with an unsuspecting mailman on our front step. Here are a couple of pictures, and this wasn't even the biggest piece of ice!
